One Thousand Books is an experimental art book festival in Copenhagen celebrating the dynamic and rapidly growing independent publishing scene to the Danish and international public.

The festival itself takes place over the weekend of April 23–24, which also marks the opening of the exhibition Manifolds. Working in co-operation with thirteen publishers in Denmark and abroad, One Thousand Books has arranged a group exhibition that showcases trailblazing book and exhibition projects created by contemporary artists. The publishers will be present throughout the opening weekend, and visitors will have the opportunity to speak directly to the creative forces behind the exhibition.

The relationship between books and exhibitions is often either that of the catalogue or books statically displayed out of reach and behind glass. However, there must be a more engaging, democratic and ultimately more deserving manner to exhibit a book work. What if we get rid of the glass vitrines and expand the book as an installation in an art space setting? This is the question around which One Thousand Books 2016 revolves.

One Thousand Books is organized by Lodret Vandret, a collaborative platform for independent publishing and exhibition making based in Copenhagen, and supported by A.P. Møller Foundation, Danish Arts Foundation, Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Foundation and Copenhagen City Council.

One Thousand Books er en eksperimenterende festival, der fejrer og udstiller den hurtigt voksende scene for uafhængig udgivelsespraksis og kunstnerbøger.

Festivalen finder sted i weekenden den 23.-24. april 2016 og i forlængelse af festivalen har One Thousand Books i samarbejde med 13 danske og udenlandske forlag arrangeret en gruppeudstilling – Manifolds– med toneangivende bog- og udstillingsprojekter skabt af samtidskunstnere. Hele åbningsweekenden vil alle forlag være til stede, og det vil være muligt at tale direkte med skaberne af udstillingen.

Forholdet mellem bøger og udtillinger udmunder oftest i udstillingskataloget eller bøger der udstilles statisk eller bag glas. Ikke desto mindre må der findes en mere engagerende, demokratisk og værdig måde at udstille bøger på. Hvad hvis vi skiller os af med glasmontrerne og udfolder bogen som en installation i den kunsthals-sammenhæng? Det er det spørgsmål som One Thousand Books 2016 forsøger at besvare.
