Manifesto

16 jun – 12 aug 2018

The critically acclaimed cinematic work Manifesto is Julian Rosefeldt’s first motion picture created from his art work consisting of a thirteen-channel video installation, which was presented for the first time in December 2015 in Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne. Since then, the installation has toured around the world, including Berlin, New York and Aarhus. The film version premiered in Denmark in 2017, and can now be experienced during the summer at Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

The German artist Julian Rosefeldt has created the spectacular film work based on manifestos from the 19th and the 20th century. Rosefeldt has cut and collected a collage of the art field’s manifestos, and his work draws threads to Futurism, Dadaism, Fluxus, Suprematism, Situationism, Dogma 95 etc. At the same time, the film is directly inspired by artistically practices by Claes Oldenburgs, Yvonne Rainers, Kazimir Malevics, André Bretons, Elaine Sturtevants, Sol LeWitts and Jim Jarmuschs among others.

Thirteen different tableaus with thirteen different characters, all played by Cate Blanchett, lead us through a string of culture defined manifestos.

Manifesto, which in its original form was a multi-screen video installation, was recorded over twelve days in Berlin with a production budget on 90.000 euro. The industrial and futuristic soundscape in the work is composed by the German musician Nils Frahm, and the pictures are created by the German film photographer Christoph Krauss. Manifesto premiered on Sundance Film Festival in 2017, and has since then been in competition at Tribeca Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam among others.

Manifesto

16 jun – 12 aug 2018
