Exhibitions 2022: Colonialism, socially engaging art and the digital age

In 2022, visitors at Kunsthal Charlottenborg can look forward to exhibitions with New Red Order, Jeannette Ehlers and Cao Fei and experience works by artists such as Shadi Habib Allah, Simon Denny, Geumhyung Jeong, Josephine Pryde, Hito Steyerl, Martine Syms, Nora Turato, Guan Xiao.

Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2022

Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is among the most important open, censored exhibitions in Europe. Curated by the artist duo Hesselholdt & Mejlvang. Further info here.

New Red Order
March 23–August 7, 2022, opening March 23
New Red Order is an unusual institution; a public secret society of rotating and expanding membership, including core contributors Adam Khalil, Zack Khalil, and Jackson Polys, who deploy sculpture, performance and video to confront colonial structures with incisive humour, to promote Indigenous futures. MFA Degree Show 2022

Afgang (MFA Degree Show) is an annual exhibition celebrating this year’s 25 graduates from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts. Curated by the Swedish curator group, Index. Further info here.

Kenneth Balfelt Team // Johan August: Sowing the seed of love

For decades, the Kenneth Balfelt Team have made a significant contribution to socially committed art. In the courtyard of Kunsthal Charlottenborg, visitors can explore their former projects and take part in the creation of their new art project. Further info here.

Jeannette Ehlers
June 11–August 7, 2022, opening June 10
In this summer’s major solo show, Jeannette Ehlers will focus on Danish colonial history, collectivity and the activist potential of art through sculpture, video and performance. Curated by Awa Konaté and Lotte Løvholm. Further info here.

Copenhagen – Red Light Green Light: Intimacy, desire and tension (In the Realm of the Senses)
June 11–July 10, 2022, opening June 10
Intensity and intimacy are key aspects of the exhibition, where internationally renowned artists such as Geumhyung Jeong and Korakrit Arunanondchaieong will create works for Copenhagen’s scenic spaces and halls. Curated by Charlotte Sprogøe and associated with two research projects focusing on art’s use of contemporaneity, sensibility and site. Further info here.

Post-Capital: Art and the Economics of the Digital Age

Post-Capital brings together works by 21 artists addressing the nature of production, consumption and wealth in the 21st century. Works of sculpture, painting, photography, video and performance explore the paradoxes, absurdities and ethical questions posed by post-industrial and perhaps post-capital economies. Curated by Michelle Cotton and produced by Mudam Luxembourg–Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean in close collaboration with Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Further info here.

Cao Fei: Asia One

This autumn, Kunsthal Charlottenborg presents a solo exhibition featuring the critically acclaimed Chinese artist Cao Fei. She is particularly known for her ambitious film installations, which combine social commentary and popular aesthetics as the basis for reflecting on the extensive developments taking place in Chinese society today. Honey Biba Beckerlee: Digital Matters
October 13–December 18, 2022, opening October 12
Danish artist Honey Biba Beckerlee registers connections and entanglements across the realms of geology, technology and biology, mapping the movement of elements from nature into the computer and further into the body. Further info here.
