Det internationalt anerkendte kunstnerkollektiv DIS, der stod bag den seneste Berlin Biennale, kommer nu til København. Udstillingen DIS presents: What Do People Do All Day? præsenterer et udvalg af spektakulære videoværker fra den nyudviklede videoplatform dis.art såvel som filmiske miljøer og installationer, der stiller spørgsmål til samfundets fremtid og hvad vi mennesker gør i vores hverdag for at påvirke den.

Videoplatformen dis.art er et forsøg på at udbrede tankerne gennem film skabt af kunstnere, filmskabere og tænkere, der alle beskæftiger dig med edutainment som fremtidens læreform. På udstillingen DIS presents: What Do People Do All Day? kan de besøgende opleve et udvalg af disse film fra dis.art, der fremhæver dét, der drager DIS lige nu: tilhørsforhold i en rodløs netværksbaseret verden; forstædernes indtog; kunstig intelligens; forholdet mellem teknologi, vision og magt, samt arbejdets fremtid:

”Miljøet kollapser, og imens bruger vi vores tid på at klikke og scrolle, sende billeder ud i æteren og sjældent læse andet end overskrifterne – alt imens den dybere historie stadigt bliver mere umulig at få greb om. Men selv i vores teknokapitalistiske nutid findes der folk, der serverer måltider for andre, gør rent og transporterer ting fra ét sted til et andet.” – DIS, New York

Titlen What Do People Do All Day? er hentet fra den danske billedkunstner Simon Dybbroe Møllers nye værk, der i sig selv er en moderne opdatering af Richard Scarrys børnebog fra 1968 med samme navn – en bog, hvor nuttede dyrefigurer udfører en række helt typiske jobfunktioner. Simon Dybroe Møller er netop tiltrådt som Professor på Kunstakademiets Billedhuggerskole i efteråret 2019 og bidrager med et helt nyt værk til udstillingen.

Udstillingen sammenstiller overflade og kompleksitet, fortid og fremtid, pædagogik og kunst og stiller netop dette spørgsmål om hvad folk egentlig laver i løbet af dagen, for dels at anerkende vores aktuelle passivitet og dels aktivt at undersøge, hvad der bør gøres.

DIS består af Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso og David Toro. Kunstnerkollektivet blev skabt i 2010 og har tidligere været en del af New Museum Triennial Surround Audience (2015), gruppeudstillingen Co-Workers på Musée Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2015) og New Photography på MoMA i New York (2015). Gruppen har kurateret den 9. udgave af Berlin Biennalen The Present in Drag (2016), deltaget i gruppeudstillingen I was Raised on the Internet på MCA i Chicago (2018), kurateret og deltaget i Genre-Nonconforming: The DIS Edutainment Network på De Young i San Francisco (2017-18), Thumbs that Type and Swipe på Casa Encendida i Madrid (2018) og A Good Crisis på Baltimore Museum of Art (2018).

DIS presents: What Do People Do All Day? er kurateret af DIS, skabt i samarbejde med Tranen – Rum for Samtidskunst og præsenteret i samarbejde med CPH:DOX.

The internationally renowned artists’ collective DIS, who curated the 9th Berlin Biennale, are now coming to Copenhagen. The exhibition DIS presents: What Do People Do All Day? shows a selection of spectacular video works from the newly developed video platform dis.art as well as cinematic settings and installations that question the future of society – and what we humans do in our everyday lives to influence that future.

Through the medium of film, the video platform dis.art aims to convey a range of ideas conjured up by artists, filmmakers and thinkers, all of which posit the future of learning as edutainment. At the exhibition DIS presents: What Do People Do All Day? visitors can experience a selection of films from dis.art that highlight DIS’s current fixations: the nature of ‘belonging’ in a rootless, networked world; the advent of suburbia; artificial intelligence; the relationships between technology, vision, and power; and the future of work:

“The environment is collapsing and we spend our days clicking and scrolling, recirculating images and rarely reading beyond headlines, while the deeper story becomes increasingly impossible to grasp. Despite our technocapitalist present, people still serve meals, clean spaces and transport things from one place to another”. – DIS, New York

The title What Do People Do All Day? is taken from Simon Dybbroe Møller’s new episodic series, a contemporary update to Richard Scarry’s 1968 children’s book of the same name in which cute animal characters embody their straightforward professions. Simon Dybroe Møller has just been appointed Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Sculpture School in the autumn of 2019 and contributes a new work to the exhibition.

Juxtaposing surface and complexity, past and futurity, pedagogy and art, the exhibition poses this highly pertinent question – what do people do all day? – in order to point out the passivity of our current era and to actively inquire what should be done.
