Henover sommeren dedikerer Kunsthal Charlottenborg den store sydfløj til en soloudstilling med den internationalt anerkendte kunstner Jane Jin Kaisen. Centralt i udstillingen, der er den hidtil mest omfattende af den koreansk-fødte danske kunstner, er hendes overvældende filmværk Community of Parting, der blev vist i Den Koreanske Pavillon som del af den prestigefyldte Venedig Biennale sidste år.

Filmen er en montage af shama-nistiske ritualer, naturscener, bylandskaber og arkivmateriale, der suppleres af poetiske voice-overs og vidnesbyrd. Selve optagelserne er skabt over en femårig periode, og Jane Jin Kaisen har filmet i både Nord- og Sydkorea, men også i Japan, Kina, Kazakhstan, USA og Tyskland. Værket er til dels selvbiografisk, hvor kunstnerens baggrund som koreansk adopteret, på tærsklen mellem kulturer og familier – væves sammen med myter, ritualer og historiske begivenheder. Herfra trækkes forbindelser til et udvalg af tidligere værker fra de seneste ti år, hvor kunstneren udforsker emner som hukommelse, adskillelse, oversættelse og migration i krydsfeltet mellem personlige og kollektive historier.

During the summer, the large south wing at Kunsthal Charlottenborg is taken over by a solo exhibition presenting the internationally acclaimed artist Jane Jin Kaisen. The exhibition will be the largest-ever to feature this Korean-born Danish artist, and the centrepiece will be her awe-inspiring film Community of Parting, which was shown in the Korean Pavilion as part of the prestigious Venice Biennale in 2019.

The film is a montage of shamanistic rituals, scenes of nature, urban landscapes and archival material, complemented by poetic voice-overs and testimonies. The footage was shot over a five-year period, with Jane Jin Kaisen filming in both North and South Korea as well as in Japan, China, Kazakhstan, the United States and Germany.

The work is partly autobiographical: the artist’s own diasporic background blends with myths, rituals and historical events. At Kunsthal Charlottenborg, the film will for the first time ever form part of a larger installation that incorporates materials such as rice paper, textiles, photography and found objects. From this, connections are made to a selection of earlier works from the last ten years where the artist explores topics such as memory, separation, translation and migration in a field where personal and collective stories meet.
