Museum of Sound, A listening installation dedicated to Mika Vainio, 11 November – 30 November 2025
Step into a space where sound is felt with the whole body, as Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s cinema is transformed into a site-specific listening installation paying tribute to the uncompromising sonic universe of Finnish sound artist and musician Mika Vainio.
Mika Vainio (1963–2017) was a pioneer in electronic music and sound art, known for his radically minimalist works that challenge the way we perceive and experience sound. Through deep vibrations and fragile frequencies, his music moves close to the body, evoking emotional and sensory responses. How can sound make us feel? And what happens when we truly listen?
The installation invites you to let the noise of the outside world fade away and make space for sound’s rhythm and resonance. It features selected works by Mika Vainio alongside playlists curated by Danish and international artists connected to his sonic universe.
Museum of Sound was originally developed as part of the major retrospective exhibition on Mika Vainio at Kiasma in Helsinki – a sensory tribute to one of the most significant figures in contemporary sound art. The project was created by Vainio’s long-time partner and curator at the Mika Vainio Estate, Rikke Lundgreen, and Tommi Grönlund, co-founder of the legendary Finnish label Sähkö Recordings.
The exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg is curated by Jesper N. Jørgensen and supported by the Danish Arts Foundation.
