Kunsthal Charlottenborg kicks off the fall season with their most comprehensive exhibition of large-scale contemporary art to date: Big Art. Art works by some of the most acclaimed artists in the world including Ai Weiwei, Douglas Coupland, Jeppe Hein, Julie Edel Hardenberg, SUPERFLEX and Victor Ash, are exhibited at 1:1 scale – the original size of the art envisioned for BIG’s buildings and urban projects globally. One of the highlights features the original house from Lars Von Trier’s serial killer thriller ‘The House That Jack Built’ which premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May. Designed by BIG, the house is shaped by the building material and not for the fainthearted!

Big Art explores the field where art and architecture intersect, placing particular emphasis on the special challenges and demands artists face when working on a vast scale in architectural and urban spaces. The exhibition title, Big Art, has a dual meaning: every artist featured has been chosen on the basis of their collaboration with BIG and at the same time the exhibition presents art on a large scale, showing each individual piece at the original size envisioned for its intended urban setting.

The exhibition transforms the 1,000 m2 south wing of Kunsthal Charlottenborg into an architectural landscape that welcomes visitors to explore BIG’s creative collaborations with a total of nineteen contemporary artists: A Kassen, Victor Ash, Douglas Coupland, Es Devlin, Shepard Fairey, Peter Funch, Julie Edel Hardenberg, Jeppe Hein, HuskMitNavn, John Kørner, Benoit Maire, Tomás Saraceno, Kaspar Astrup Schröder, Snarkitecture, SUPERFLEX, Martin de Thurah, Lars von Trier, Andrew Zuckerman, Ai Weiwei. The exhibition is curated by Michael Thouber in collaboration with BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group.

Bjarke Ingels Group
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) is a Danish architectural firm founded by Bjarke Ingels in 2005, comprising a large team of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape architects, interior designers, product designers, researchers and inventors. With offices in Copenhagen, New York and London, the group is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, Northern America, Asia and the Middle East.

BIG combines a range of disciplines to create buildings and urban spaces that surprise and create new experiences. BIG integrates multicultural exchanges, global economic flows and communication technologies in their orchestration of architecture and urban development, working with what they term ‘pragmatic utopian’ architecture which seeks to merge aspects such as everyday life, leisure, work, parking and shopping with elements such as art, philosophy and contemporary movements.

2.-13. januar 2019
In the last part of the exhibition period Kunsthal Charlottenborg presents Kaspar Astrup Schröder’s documentary film Big Time from 2017. The film follows Bjarke Ingels during the course of 6 years and gives a unique insight of the creative mind of one of the world’s most innovative architects. The film is screened Tue-Fri at 3pm and 6pm, Sat-Sun at 12pm and 3pm in Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s cinmea. Duration: 90 min.

Til efteråret slår Kunsthal Charlottenborg dørene op for Big Art, sin hidtil mest omfangsrige udstilling af samtidskunst i stor skala. Kunstværker af nogle af verdens mest anerkendte kunstnere så som Ai Weiwei, Douglas Coupland, Jeppe Hein, Julie Edel Hardenberg, Superflex, Victor Ash m.fl vil kunne opleves i 1:1 skala og tager de besøgende på en rejse gennem Bjarke Ingels’ arkitektur i hele verden. Et af hovedværkerne er det originale hus fra Lars Von Triers nye seriemorderthriller ’The House That Jack Built’ tegnet af Bjarke Ingels.

Big Art undersøger, hvad der sker i krydsfeltet mellem kunst og arkitektur og sætter særligt fokus på, hvad det kræver af kunstnere at arbejde i stor skala i bygnings- og byrumsprojekterne. Udstillingens titel Big Art skal derfor forstås på to måder: at alle kunstnerne på udstillingen er kurateret ud fra deres samarbejde med tegnestuen BIG, og at der er tale om en udstilling af kunst i stor skala, hvor værkerne vil blive vist i den størrelse på kunsthallen som de oprindeligt er tænkt til bygninger og byrum.

Udstillingen omdanner Kunsthal Charlottenborgs 1000 kvadratmeter store sydfløj til arkitektoniske miljøer, hvor man kan man opleve BIGs kreative samarbejder med i alt 19 samtidskunstnere: A Kassen, Victor Ash, Douglas Coupland, Es Devlin, Shepard Fairey, Peter Funch, Julie Edel Hardenberg, Jeppe Hein, HuskMitNavn, John Kørner, Benoit Maire, Tomás Saraceno, Kaspar Astrup Schröder, Snarkitecture, SUPERFLEX, Martin de Thurah, Lars von Trier, Andrew Zuckerman, Ai Weiwei. Udstillingen Big Art er skabt i samarbejde med Bjarke Ingels Group og er kurateret af Michael Thouber.

Bjarke Ingels Group
BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group er et dansk arkitektfirma grundlagt af Bjarke Ingels i 2005. Tegnestuen består af arkitekter, designere, urbanister, landskabsarkitekter, indretnings- og produktdesignere, forskere og opfindere, og har kontorer i København, New York og London, og er i øjeblikket involveret i et stort antal projekter i hele Europa, Nordamerika, Asien og Mellemøsten.

I samarbejde med andre discipliner skaber BIG bygninger og byrumsprojekter som overrasker og skaber nye oplevelser i byrummet. Filmen er optaget over seks år og giver et unikt indblik i det kreative sind hos en af verdens mest succesrige og innovative arkitekter – Bjarke Ingels. Vises tir-fre kl. 15 og 18, lør-søn kl. 12 og 15 i Kunsthal Charlottenborgs biograf. Varighed: 90 min.
