Amalie Smith, Levende, 26 September 2026 – 21 February 2027

Danish visual artist and author Amalie Smith (b. 1985) presents her most extensive solo exhibition to date, featuring new works created specifically for the North Wing of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Through a series of sculptural installations and an immersive sound work, she explores the emergence of life and the material processes, patterns, and traces through which living beings leave their mark on the world.

The exhibition Levende unfolds through a series of large display cases containing hybrid sculptures composed of textiles, ceramics, natural materials, and everyday objects. As if viewed through a microscope, Amalie Smith brings into focus the connections between nature, human life, science, art, and artificial life.

Drawing on a multidisciplinary practice that brings together literature, research, and visual art, Amalie Smith examines the grand narratives of life on Earth while zooming in on living matter across past, present, and future.

Amalie Smith (b. 1985) is an author and visual artist who graduated from the Danish Academy of Creative Writing in 2009 and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2015. Her recent projects include Levende jord (2025), Sang om planeten (2024), and Looming (2022). She has published nine books, including Terracotta (2025), Thread Ripper (2022), and Marble (2014).

The exhibition is supported by the AP Moller Foundation, Aage & Johanne Louis-Hansen’s Foundation, Augustinus Foundation, Danish Arts Foundation, Lemvigh-Müller Foundation, New Carlsberg Foundation, and the Obel Family Foundation.
